The pigeons’ training is progressing well, and many are in body moult. There is a big variation in age of the pigeons so the wing moult is in various stages. We expect that most pigeons will have finished their body moult in April when training will be intensified. The pigeons are ranging well for up to 60 minutes. When weather permits, we have been tossing from short distances and from various directions. All this training is being done in single basket releases to improve the birds’ orientation skills and to make them less reliant on other pigeons to home. The first mass liberation is planned to be done on Saturday 4th April. The first live training toss is planned for Wednesday 15th April from 47km.
We currently have no sickness in the loft, but we have several injuries from birds of prey. Our weekly microscopic examinations have shown nothing of consequence. We are due another visit from Dr Rob Conradie who will do a thorough examination of a representative sample of pigeons. The pigeons are on a good quality moult diet and our health and treatment programme is without antibiotics but vitamins and natural remedies are given (antibiotics will only be given if it is absolutely necessary).
We are looking forward to a fiercely competitive racing series with many excellent pigeons from the 30 countries competing.
