RACE REPORT HOTSPOT 5
Hotspot 5 was held from Raceway on Tuesday the 15th of July 2025, 378 km from the loft. Basketing for the race was done on Sunday morning, 13 July to enable the vehicle to travel the road which is under re-construction. The pigeons were fed and watered enroute and arrived at the liberation point on Monday afternoon. Liberation the next morning was into clear skies and the birds cleared quickly.
There was an East North-East wind to start which changed to an East wind by 8am. Interestingly the upper levels from 1500 meters were North winds. Temperatures ranged from 10 degrees Celsius to a maximum daytime temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The first pigeons arrived at a Velocity of 1332 m/min. The East winds picked up considerably around the halfway point and as seen on the Trackers, the birds were pushed towards Botswana. We had some reports of birds stopping at some water points.
The birds were prepared well but the race proved difficult with pigeons arriving in singles or small groups over the next 2 days. Some of the birds that returned on the second and third day were injured.
1559 pigeons were sent to the race and they returned as follows,
- 48 birds arrived in the first 15 minutes (3.1%)
- 131 birds within 1 hour (8.4%)
- 267 on the first day (17.1%)
630 birds returned in race time by the end of the second day. 59.6% were still out when the clock was stopped.
