RACE REPORT HOTSPOT 6

Hotspot 6 was held from Shangani 435 km on Sunday 16th July. The temperatures were cool with a maximum of 24 degrees Celsius and partly cloudy conditions. There was a moderate East tail to crosswind which became stronger during the day.

There were 3 pigeons on the first drop which recorded high velocities. These arrivals were closely followed by other groups. Most early pigeons came from very high, taking advantage of favourable winds.

The GPS Tracking results from birds carrying tracker rings showed a maximum height of 1359 meters (4458 feet) above ground level.

Many of the late arriving pigeons came back from the West having gone with the wind and working back to the Loft into a head wind. The majority of the late birds are in good condition.

Tracker pigeons showed that late pigeons stopped before continuing. See tracker results for pigeon 10528 which flew at 1359 meters above ground and ended up 80 km west of Victoria Falls. After stopping for 3 hours this pigeon flew back to the loft just above ground level.

Of the 943 pigeons basketed the following was recorded;

3 birds in 5 min        

27 birds in 10 min  (2.9%)

85 birds in 15 min  (9%)

300 birds in 1 hour  (31.8%)

517 birds on day 1 (54.8%)

When the clock was stopped on the second day the total returns were 706 birds. 75% returned in race time.
